In 2018, Dr. Mesbah Kamal,
a professor of the Department of History at DU said Dhaka University has become
a higher madrasa and this is unacceptable in any way.
He said, "Look at the
admissions that are made in Dhaka University today, and see how many students
who have studied there get the opportunity to get admitted. Dhaka University
has now become a higher madrasa. I have been teaching at Dhaka University for 34
years, I studied for 6 years before that, and I have been associated with Dhaka
University for 40 years. I am saying that I am seeing Dhaka University turning
into a higher madrasa before my eyes. And this is unacceptable in any
way."
There are of course some specific reasons for this. These are
mentioned below.
For several years now, it
has been observed in Bangladesh that madrasa students are getting admission in
Dhaka University in greater numbers.
Madrasa students get higher
marks than general students in the reserved marks of the admission test.
Reserved marks are
determined by averaging the marks obtained in the 10th and 12th exams.
On the other hand, the
Madrasa Education Board passes their exams with full marks to madrasa students.
As a result, madrasa students pass the admission test with higher marks.
Later, these students get
special benefits for admission to doctors, engineering or other government
universities. They later join the Chhatra Shibir and take on the responsibility
of leadership of the Chhatra Shibir.
Reasons behind
Chhatra Shibir's absolute victory in the DUCSU elections:
An analysis of the election
results shows that the distance between the winners and their closest rivals is
several thousand votes.
The difference in votes
between Sadiq Qayem, who won the DUCSU VP post, and his rival, the Chhatra
Dal-backed candidate Abidul Islam Khan, is more than nine thousand.
Political analysts and
former DUCSU student leaders believe that the narrative that Shibir was in
charge of all the field-level leadership from the original planning of the
July-August mass uprising was one of the reasons for their victory in the DUCSU
elections.
Analysts also say that many
of the leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir have continued their
organization's activities from 'posts and titles' of other student
organizations or underground. Those who came out in public under the banner of
Chhatra Shibir after the Awami League was ousted from power.
Political analyst and Dhaka
University professor Zubaida Nasreen believes that the narrative that has been
put forward over the leadership of the July uprising in the past year has
influenced voters.
Professor Nasreen further
said, "During the debate over ownership of the uprising, Shibir said that
they were at the root of everything from the original plan of the uprising to
the leadership of the movement, such as redefining the profile, the one-point demand,
and the slogans."
On the other hand, former
DUCSU student leader Mushtaq Hossain believes that the current generation has
lost interest in the style of politics that has prevailed since independence.
The former student leader
believes that the younger generation has considered giving opportunities to
religiously-based political parties in the face of various discrimination.
This time, he thinks, Dhaka
University students are 'probably trying to give them a chance.
"If it weren't for the
role that radical Islamist forces played in the July mass uprising, it would
not have been possible to free ourselves from Sheikh Hasina's strong rule. I
think it may have worked as a form of sympathy," said Mr. Hossain.
On the otherside, there are
23 full residential halls / hostels at Dhaka university. Former general
secretary of Dhaka University Journalists Association, Saidur Rahman, has
claimed that Chhatra Shibir spent around 150 million taka on the Dhaka
University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) elections.
He said, "Chhatra
Shibir spent an average of around 3.5 million taka per hall . In total, this
expenditure stands at around 150 million taka."
Why the disaster of BNP’s Chhatra Dal :
Several leaders of the
frontline of the student movement against discrimination who participated in
the mass uprising also participated in the DUCSU elections. But they lost the
vote. The Chhatra Dal also suffered a setback.
The reason behind this loss
is that after the mass uprising, many of them have been accused of extortion,
corruption or various other charges. This issue has become prominent in the
minds of the young generation of voters.
Almost all the votes in
the girls' halls of Dhaka University went to Chhatra Shibir.
Political analysts believe
that DUCSU and Hall Sangsad voters have also kept in mind the issue of which
party has more control or influence over the government and who is running the
country in the past year after August 5th.
"Voters are keeping in
mind who is exerting invisible influence on the government, who is controlling
the government. Because voters in this country are thinking, who can come to
power? Should I not waste one of my votes?"
Besides this , From the
beginning, the nationalist Chhatra Dal was in a state of doubt and uncertainty
about whether to participate in the DUCSU elections. While the rival
organizations were carrying out various activities on campus, the Chhatra Dal
could not yet announce its panel. Even the workers and supporters of the
organization had no clear idea about who would be the candidate for the VP
post. The Chhatra Dal announced the panel just 20 days before the election.
Due to insufficient
preparation, lack of proper planning, and lack of proper coordination within
the Chhatra Dal in determining what the campaign strategy would be. In the past
year after the July mass uprising, the Chhatra Dal could not present any of its
leaders to the students in the same way that the Chhatra Shibir has 'focused'
(brought forward) its two leaders Abu Sadiq Kayem and SM Farhad on campus in
various ways. On the contrary, no one knew for sure who the Chhatra Dal would
elect for the VP post even after the election schedule was announced.
